Over the past month, we’ve talked about how to celebrate our own successes and amplify those of others - thank you to all those who shared your WBW and National Breastfeeding Month celebrations with us!
Caring for the carer is often forgotten and this too often includes the needs of staff who are breastfeeding or chestfeeding themselves. Within WABA’s Action Folder for WBW, there are some important links to making workplaces welcoming to expectant and new parents - as workers, rather than patients.
As breastfeeding advocates, we are called to make the case to employers that breastfeeding- and family-friendly policies are both good business and good for society - how well do the employers that implement the 10 Steps to Successful Breastfeeding carry this commitment over to their own workers?
The ILO’s module on creating and sustaining a breastfeeding-friendly workplace is an excellent place to start, with practical advice that will apply to many kinds of workplaces and clinical settings globally. What kinds of steps can employers take to facilitate their staff meeting infant feeding recommendations?
Structural supports that enable these employer-specific policies and programs to facilitate progress. Countries that already mandate at least the ILO minimum maternity leave recommendations and other parent-friendly policies in law place much less burden on individual employers to create seamless policies that support their staff. Regardless of the starting point or barriers before them, employers who embrace a breastfeeding-friendly workplace will find that there are many examples from which to draw inspiration and always new opportunities to model their commitment to their staff and their families.
