In a decidedly positive tone, recent experience teaches us to perceive a smile through a face cover — through smiling eyes.
This brings to mind the way smiles are emitted in telecommunication: telephony and computers. In the manner of communicating, revealing a sense of contentment, which those in the healthcare field certainly recognize and appreciate.
Possibly an area where practitioners are involved in a quality program implementation process such as BFHI/BFI: a catalyst—a key factor that motivates facilities to transform their practices towards more client-centered care where the quality of care for breastfeeding improves. This enhances cooperation and collaboration among staff members. Or so it is understood.
As a result, practitioners from different disciplines may need to communicate with each other. —When an infant needs specialized medical care for diagnostic purposes, for example. And is temporarily transported to a setting where such additional care is provided.
Clearly, as part of the multidisciplinary team, one of the caregivers to the mother/parent-infant dyad communicates with the other by telephone, for example. Relevant information from the infant’s record is transmitted to them. Exchanging a smile of convergence of ideas, of efforts to support the dyad towards the achievement of their breastfeeding/chestfeeding goals.
This form of communication between caregivers could reveal the improvement of staff attitudes towards breastfeeding: an attribute characteristic of a setting, often noted during BFHI/BFI program implementation. Knowing how to make a phone call with a smile to your colleagues underscores the importance of supporting mother/parent-infant dyads in their individual nursing journey.
