As a child my parents nicknamed me Miss Why (Miss Pourquoi in French). That makes me laugh still today as I find myself pondering, this time on: Drivers towards change.
Thinking back to the early days when I first started working in a maternal-infant care setting, things were quite different. I looked at what motivated me towards a change of my own beliefs and behaviors in such a context.
Well, an intrinsic factor, for one. And in precedent, an extrinsic one: that being; an awareness that things could be done differently—an inspiration shaped by the teachings of role models.
In other words, the incentive to improve was the result of the ability to notice.
This creates a "domino effect”, by raising awareness on the positive outcomes favoured by the optimization of the quality of care: Contagiousness that, in my opinion, has such a positive impact on improvement projects.
With time, I have gathered that during the process of implementation of programs such as BFHI/BFI it is purposeful for team members to set time aside to reflect on the nature of the motivators for change. Indeed, connecting to others, sharing knowledge by serving as role models, and listening to other team members was reported to be quite insightful.
Favouring the gathering of team members: A contributing factor of information gathering.
By that, perhaps an occasion to share thoughts after reading the article: Motivating Change: a grounded theory of how to achieve large-scale, sustained change, co-created with improvement organizations across the UK, for example.
Narrowing the process down to “finding the first domino” (the incentive) may be helpful for starters— A pleasant activity that can bring a better understanding of motivation altogether and the possibility of a subsequent “domino effect.”
