A small gathering of people enjoying a picnic lunch on a summer’s afternoon; Just right for the exchange of fond reminiscences of days when the now-grown children were little. Each spoke in turn smiling at the sweet recollections. Some twice as many: The mother of twins.
The scenery may translate for some into a work setting. Notably those who are among families in a perinatal care unit. Those who play a key role in developing strategies that contribute to the benefit of mother/parent-infant triads.
Implementing initiatives such as BFHI/BFI can foster better understanding of breastfeeding counselling that would best protect, support and promote breastfeeding among specific population groups, such as those with multiple pregnancies (2). Contributing thus to mindfulness, a woman/person who has had a twin pregnancy may need special counselling and support.
Since breastfeeding counselling should anticipate and address important challenges and contexts (2), some health care providers reported that it is helpful to commence a discussion with women/persons who are carrying multiple pregnancies, during prenatal visits. The discussion addresses their specific needs and is furthered postnatally.
Subsequent conversations with mothers/parents of a multiple birth may have reference to supporting them in establishing skills, competencies, and confidence in nursing each one of their infants.
Naming each infant by their first name was viewed by some as a caring gesture. As supporting the parent in how to recognize discrete personal signs and behavioural state shifts to determine when it is appropriate to breastfeed (1).
Also, gently helping them to set up comfortably and position both babies; perhaps one for nursing, the other close by, asleep still. Guiding the parent to observe for individual signs of readiness to root and suck, in one and the signs of transition to wakefulness in the other, simultaneously. As to not to interrupt the deep sleep stage of one baby, or the feeding of the other.
Finally, in seeing that breastfeeding/chestfeeding is comfortable for the mother/parent and is guided by each infants’ competence and stability.
Gestures that may contribute to the storing of cherished memories-those that one exchanges with a small group of people, on a picnic blanket on a warm summer day.
May cherished memories define your journey.
