In my part of the world, September is the start of the school year, usually beginning on the first Tuesday of the month. While the calendar flips over to a new number on January 1, for me, the school year will always be the real “new year”, with new possibilities and plans. I don’t usually make resolutions at the official new year, but often find myself setting or renewing intentions as we approach the end of summer.
This can be as simple as setting some time aside to reflect on the past year or as involved as writing up a full evaluation of your learning achievements and needs. In many countries, reflective practice is a formal part of licensing and certification for healthcare professionals, recognized as an effective quality assurance practice.
Longer courses will hopefully have opportunities to reflect on learning and the experiences of applying that learning to practice. It can be tempting to skip over these activities, especially when no one will be looking at them. This is a wasted opportunity not only to document the work you have done to appreciate progress but to approach further learning better prepared.
Reflections, whether very formal or completely informal, are not about checking the facts or skills that you’ve learned, but placing them in the larger picture of why you have learned them and their significance to your practice and professional development.
This is, mostly, just for you so while you can use course documentation to provide structure, the format should not be a barrier to the reflection process itself. Whether you record your reflections in an ongoing document, a sketchbook, a journal or some other form, the commitment to reflection itself is the most important aspect. Even notes jotted on a calendar or daybook can work for those not given to wordiness!
