World Breastfeeding Week: Celebrate

July 2021

As the world prepares to mark World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) from August 1-7, BFHI-accredited hospitals and breastfeeding organizations around the world will have an opportunity to do the “promotion” part of 'promote, protect and support breastfeeding'.

A few countries do celebrate Breastfeeding Week at different times of the year and some countries, such as the United States, have multiple weeks with varying themes. Regardless of the national schedule where you live, social media has made creating and sharing content so readily available that it is worth joining in, even if your “main event” is in October, as it is in Canada.

If you haven’t planned anything yet, it’s not too late:

  1. WABA WBW Campaign Page: Look at how WBW has developed over time and how each year’s celebrations promote perspectives on breastfeeding advocacy around the world
  2. Professional Organizations: Professional organizations are often a good starting point and partner for promotional events and content, both to share among colleagues and to the wider public. Check what your national or regional organization has planned.
  3. Community Organizations: WBW offers an easy way to build further relationships with the organizations that support breastfeeding and chestfeeding in your community. Take advantage of these networks to share your successes during WBW and use your own communication channels to amplify the good work of those who support families in the community.

The ideas above require very little time investment but can be an opportunity to connect with new allies and rekindle interest in implementing the 10 Steps. Even if you have very limited resources and time, participation through sharing the content of others promotes breastfeeding and the important work that you do to support families year-round.

A few tips:

  • Use hashtags effectively: WABA and their partners have suggested hashtags and their consistent use will help the entire campaign to be seen
  • #WBW2021 #WABA #ProtectBreastfeeding #SharedResponsibility #breastfeeding #SDGs #worldbreastfeedingweek2021 #ProtectBreastfeedingaSharedResponsibility #protectbreastfeedingtogether #buildingbackbetter #warmchain4breastfeeding #breastfeeding4publichealth
  • Ensure that account holders and content creators involved in the sharing or drafting of content for WBW are fluent in the Code and the identification of the inappropriate product and brand promotion
  • Focus on positive messages that will resonate with the audience you are speaking to: you don’t need to cover every aspect of every infant feeding related topic

What do you have planned for WBW? Tell us about it in the comments below - and be sure to read the responses to find ideas and ways to share the celebration of breastfeeding around the world.
