A knock on the door.

February 2022

Knock-knock.

-“Yes”.

Door opens.

-“Hello, my name is X. I am a Y. The objective of my visit is Z. Is this a good time to visit your family?”

The setting: A perinatal care unit at a health-care facility.

The time point: the first 2–3 days after birth. During which one of the minimum of six breastfeeding counseling contacts occurs.

The climate: Introduction to interaction. In respect.

A knock on the door2

Many people working in a BFHI/BFI implementation environment may have the privilege of accompanying families at the start of a nurturing, caring, and responsive relationship with their infant. An environment where many can benefit from knowledge transfer activities that positively enhance People-centred counselling. And, come to know that by adopting an attitude that recognizes the important role of the parent, leads them to feel empowered and respected. Naturally, counselling parents in a way that responds to their needs, preferences, and values nourishes empowerment.

With this in mind, we (counsellors) may want to draw attention to our own behaviors and conduct as these may reflect our opinions and sentiments about a situation. These also have an effect on how trust is built among the parents we meet and support. Some examples of these actions include: Knocking on the door (or announcing one’s presence behind a curtain); Using an auxiliary verb to introduce a polite suggestion, such as “May I”— “May I sit with you as your baby practices nursing?”

Simple gestures of respect and sensitivity can help parents gain confidence and achieve their breast|chestfeeding goal. In essence, one may be contributing to the feeling of parental empowerment by commencing with something as simple as a knock on the door.

May simplicity define your journey.
