Of all teachers

January 2022

Of all teachers, children are ‘our’ best —

This is a statement that is made by many of my generation.

And, as for the one [generation] that follows mine: without a doubt, they are certainly better breastfeeding/chestfeeding connoisseurs.

 Of all teachers

It may be true that this generation assimilated the gestures of breastfeeding/chestfeeding at a young age, through experience/observation. Assuming the family model was sufficient for this purpose.

For example, I remember the image of youngsters of this generation playing with a doll: rocking it, dressing it, caressing it gently with their fingertips around its face, comforting it by hushing softly in its ear and placing it in the breastfeeding/chestfeeding position. On this last point, memories vary in detail as to how the doll is held. Either standing, lying down or sitting. In the park as well as in the orchard, the doll seems naturally in its place, stable, in the arms of the child.

Let’s first look at the connection of the above to the implementation of quality programs such as BFHI/BFI. Namely, the model.

It should be noted that the transmission of skills to support breastfeeding/chestfeeding, especially know-how, is done through the guidance of a mentor; someone with experience. At least from what can be deduced from the observations.

This experienced person with knowledge and skill acquired through years of professional development is commonly designated to serve as a model to the newcomers. The directional component being from seniors to novices, typically.

Then time passes, generations come and go. Eventually, the new generation joins the health care team in the neonatal unit. And the transfer of knowledge pertaining to the support of breastfeeding/chestfeeding continues; the older generation offers its expertise to the newcomer. This time, the learning of practical skills seems to come naturally, as if the beginner had been helping mothers/parents find a comfortable position for breastfeeding/chestfeeding all along.

Skills are also developed through the model of a previous generation.

Wishing you a model-filled journey.
