Those working in an environment that aims to implement BFHI/BFI may find themselves privileged to be sharing space with families at the start of their relationship with their infant. An environment where health care providers may benefit from knowledge transfer activities that positively enhance facilitative counseling skills based on individual needs. Naturally, guiding parents in a clear manner that echoes their infant's needs, certainly supports empowerment. An example of this may be information-sharing to parents in support of learning to respond to their baby’s needs when feeding cues are not evident, due to a given situation.
Some stories highlight that when engaging in conversation with parents, notably in such a situation, it may be meaningful to take into account their learning style. Providing a clear and concise flow of information may also contribute to helping them to recognize their infant’s specific needs pertaining to responsive feeding, seeing that their infant may have to be awakened at frequent intervals, for instance.
Providing simple, clear suggestions tailored to the unfamiliar context of the parents could create an inviting atmosphere; working in partnership in planning care for their infant. This certainly helps parents gain confidence and find the information they need to make informed decisions about their infant's feeding. And furthermore, it helps parents see their baby's competency at the breast/chest, as well as their baby's skills in guiding them through their breastfeeding/chestfeeding journey.
May easiness define your journey.
