In the last few blog posts, we’ve looked at the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes and other aspects of Step 1. Before we move on to talk about Step 2, let’s reflect on the 40th-anniversary milestone of the Code marks this year with a round-up of the virtual events held around the world during this past month:

While Step 1 creates an environment where good practices can be implemented and measured, the second step is about how the skills and knowledge needed to implement the practices get into the hands of those who educate and care for families and their children.
The training of health care workers, whether professional or volunteer, has been a foundation of the Baby-Friendly Initiative from the very beginning - recognizing that supporting breastfeeding should not be a remote specialty, but a shared responsibility by all those who care for expectant and new parents.
The revitalized BFHI (2018) renews this commitment to ensuring that everyone within the circle of care has the knowledge and skills needed. New and updated documents provide detailed frameworks for professional development staff and educators, with a greater emphasis on achieving competence in key areas, rather than delivering a fixed curriculum or checking off hours. In the next few blogs, we’ll look at how the revitalized Step 2 provides opportunities to increase the skills of the workforce that cares for parents and their new babies around the world - and the potential pitfalls too.
