Step 2 of the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, upon which we are focusing during September, emphasizes education of the facility's staff. Using adult learning theories can be very helpful when providing this education as there are many different ways of explaining how adults learn. When investigating these theories, you may find that none of them fully explain how each individual is engaged in the process of acquiring new information.
A 2013 study by Taylor & Hamdy look at various theories used in medical education and I find that their findings can be adapted to any healthcare provider. These are the theories they used in their study:

Each learning model and rationale for learning is discussed and a new model proposed combining all aspects. It is a circular model and the authors emphasize that both learner and teacher can enter that cycle at any point. They conclude with, "The clinical teaching and learning environment is an ideal field for using adult learning theories and demonstrating their utility. Reinforcing clear thinking in both teacher and learner and considering them should improve clinical learning, and even clinical outcomes," (p. e1571).
