The Status of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes in 2020

November 2020

In May of 2020 WHO, UNICEF and the International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN) launched the 2020 Status Report, which highlights “which countries have implemented measures required by the Code,” (2).  This report provides an extensive analysis of laws that have been enacted to protect pregnant women, mothers and their infants from the inappropriate promotion of breast-milk substitutes as well as promotion to health care workers and health facilities.

At this website, you can view, for free, the video of the launch as well as download important presentations by key speakers. Two of these downloadable presentations discuss the violations of the Code in Indonesia and Mexico. One presentation gives us some sobering statistics, such as; out of 194 countries globally, only 25 of them “substantially align with the Code” whereas 58 have no provisions in national law.

One speaker presented these key conclusions:

  • Provisions have strengthened over the past 2 years in many countries.
  • No country has laws fully aligned with the Code.
  • Key provisions are missing in many countries.
  • Provisions are particularly weak for promotion through health care workers and in health systems
  • Code monitoring and enforcement are weak in most countries.

I would encourage you to take a look at these presentations to get a clearer picture of where your country stands in promoting and enforcing the Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes. It is eye-opening and at times disheartening YET by working together and supporting the International Code we can make a difference. We still have lots of work to do so be strong and learn more about how you can be an International Code Supporter.

Stay safe!
