Discharge Education

Guideline 5.1 of Step 5 of the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding1 details the education all breastfeeding mothers should receive prior to discharge from the birthing facility.  In addition to basic breastfeeding techniques of positioning and latch/attachment, this includes:


The importance of exclusive breastfeeding.

  1. How to maintain lactation for exclusive breastfeeding for about 6 months.
  2. Criteria to assess if the infant is getting enough breast milk.
  3. How to express, handle, and store breastmilk, including manual expression.
  4. How to sustain lactation if the mother is separated from her infant or will not be exclusively breastfeeding after discharge.

The first Breastfeeding Self-efficacy Scale (BSES) was developed in 1999 by Dennis and Faux2 and although this appears to be a very dated piece of research, it has been replicated and cited multiple times since its development. The use of this scale can assist health care providers to predict high-risk mothers and may “guide the development and evaluation of interventions” for modifiable factors such as maternal confidence. Based on Bandura’s social learning theory, “self-efficacy is a dynamic cognitive process in which an individual evaluates his or her capability to perform a given behavior”2. Using this scale can be helpful to identify new mothers with low breastfeeding confidence who are likely at high risk for premature weaning and not meeting their own breastfeeding goals.

With knowledge derived from the BSES, hospital or birth facility staff can provide individualized education and follow-up planning for higher risk breastfeeding individuals, possibly increasing breastfeeding initiation, exclusivity, and duration.

One important aspect to discharge education is to individualize it for each new family. Yes, we health care providers may be teaching much of the same information 3 or 5 or 20 times each day to each patient being discharged. However, each new parent is an individual, bringing their own family culture, history, support, environment, and more to this breastfeeding experience. Ask questions, involve the family in the teaching, provide hands-on learning, and plan follow-up for each new dyad. They deserve it!

  • Users who are undertaking a course as part of a group or organization have certain data tracked as part of the service we provide to Clients and Facilitators. This includes information showing if you have logged in and when, dates of completion and what and when particular study topics, resources and assessments were viewed and completed. We refer to this information as "Student Access Information"

When we talk about "Personal Information" in this Privacy Policy, we are talking about Device Information, Order Information and Student Access Information.


We use the Order Information that we collect generally to fulfill any orders placed through the Site (including processing your payment information, arranging for shipping, and providing you with invoices and/or order confirmations). Additionally, we use this Order Information to:

  • Communicate with you;
  • Screen our orders for potential risk or fraud; and
  • When in line with the preferences you have shared with us, provide you with information or advertising relating to our products or services.

We use Student Access Information to provide accurate tracking to Users and Clients on completion and use of the courses, as well as for analysis on how to improve our services.

We use the Device Information that we collect to help us screen for potential risk and fraud (in particular, your IP address), and more generally to improve and optimize our Site (for example, by generating analytics about how our customers browse and interact with the Site, and to assess the success of our marketing and advertising campaigns).


We share your Personal Information with third parties to help us use your Personal Information, as described above. For example, with your employer who needs to verify your completion or progress of your studies.
