Innocenti Declaration

“In 1990 the Innocenti Declaration on the Protection, Promotion and Support of Breastfeeding set an international agenda with ambitious targets for action. Meeting in Florence, Italy, in July of that year, government policymakers from more than 30 countries adopted the Declaration, which was later endorsed by the forty-fifth World Health Assembly and the Executive Board of UNICEF. The Innocenti Declaration reflected both the spirit of the support that was being mobilized for breastfeeding, and the recognition of the right of the infant to nutritious food enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. It captured the commitment as well as the practical vision of those who gathered in Florence to launch breastfeeding onto a higher public plane.” (1).

Increasing Breastfeeding Support

According to the World Health Organization, 3 out of 5 infants globally are not breastfed in the first hour following birth; 41% of infants around the world are exclusively breastfed between birth and six months; and if all children between birth and 23 months were optimally breastfed, at least 820,000 deaths could be prevented annually, (1). For those of us who have worked relentlessly for years to promote, protect, and support breastfeeding, those are discouraging facts.

FAQs About The Code

This post will discuss the roles and responsibilities of healthcare workers related to the WHO Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes, hereby known as The Code.  “Health workers have a vital role to play in educating mothers and other caregivers about infant and young child feeding.  It is also their moral, legal, and professional responsibility to protect, promote, and support optimal feeding,” (1).

Inappropriate Marketing Aimed at Infants

During the past ten months, we have reviewed each of the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding regarding the Baby-friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI). The remaining months of 2020 will be devoted to the World Health Organization’s Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes and other international documents that relate to The Code and their support of breastfeeding/chestfeeding.

This includes information showing if you have logged in and when, dates of completion and what and when particular study topics, resources and assessments were viewed and completed. We refer to this information as "Student Access Information"

When we talk about "Personal Information" in this Privacy Policy, we are talking about Device Information, Order Information and Student Access Information.


We use the Order Information that we collect generally to fulfill any orders placed through the Site (including processing your payment information, arranging for shipping, and providing you with invoices and/or order confirmations). Additionally, we use this Order Information to:

  • Communicate with you;
  • Screen our orders for potential risk or fraud; and
  • When in line with the preferences you have shared with us, provide you with information or advertising relating to our products or services.

We use Student Access Information to provide accurate tracking to Users and Clients on completion and use of the courses, as well as for analysis on how to improve our services.

We use the Device Information that we collect to help us screen for potential risk and fraud (in particular, your IP address), and more generally to improve and optimize our Site (for example, by generating analytics about how our customers browse and interact with the Site, and to assess the success of our marketing and advertising campaigns).


We share your Personal Information with third parties to help us use your Personal Information, as described above. For example, with your employer who needs to verify your completion or progress of your studies.
