Skin-to-skin Care from a Dad's Perspective

Just a note: I will be using fathers in this post since that is who was included in this study. Partners, I'm sure, would voice the same results in being included in their baby's care.

Research shows, many times over, that the use of skin-to-skin care (SSC) between the premature infant and his/her mother is vital to the physical health of the newborn and in increasing maternal milk supply. However, little research has been done for the fathers of premature infants in providing SSC.

Dads and Bonding

Although this article from www.bellybelly.com discusses fathers and bonding without a bottle, I want to extend this to include all partners of the birthing mothers.  Society in general, has built many bonding rituals around sharing food, and new parenthood is no different. Having dad/partner feed the new baby is often desired to increase their bonding and attachment.

Tattoos, Piercings, Scarification, and Body Modifications

In a report published online through Contemporary Pediatrics;

http://contemporarypediatrics.modernmedicine.com/contemporary-pediatrics/news/effects-body-modification-are-more-just-skin-deep?page=0,1  it was noted that "teenagers and young adults are embracing body modification, making it more commonplace and accepted than in previous generations... more and more adults and teenagers have tattoos and body piercings, with a 2010 report estimating that 38% of persons aged 18-29 years had at least 1 tattoo and 23% had piercings in places other than the earlobe... Few adults polled (2016) about their tattoos regret getting them, with most revealing that it makes them feel rebellious, strong, attractive, or spiritual."

Use of Pacifier in Baby-Friendly Facility

When I was the lead for our hospital's Baby-friendly team, I had the reputation of being anti-pacifier even though it wasn't accurate. Pacifiers have their place but are known to be a factor in early weaning from the breast when introduced prior to the healthy, full-term newborn learning how to latch well at the breast.

Using "Success" in Breastfeeding

In a newly published article, Dr. Diane Spatz (MCN, 2017) states that she "actively works to delete the word 'success' from any conversations, research, and/or publications on [the] provision of human milk or breastfeeding.  The opposite of 'success' is failure," and recommends educators and healthcare professionals "present a realistic view that the health benefits of breastfeeding are substantial for mother and child, but that it will require her to invest time, effort, and commitment to establish a breastfeeding relationship with her baby."   And we've all probably heard at least one mother talk about her "failure at breastfeeding" often coupled with emotion and guilt.

When we talk about "Personal Information" in this Privacy Policy, we are talking about Device Information, Order Information and Student Access Information.

HOW DO WE USE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION?

We use the Order Information that we collect generally to fulfill any orders placed through the Site (including processing your payment information, arranging for shipping, and providing you with invoices and/or order confirmations). Additionally, we use this Order Information to:

  • Communicate with you;
  • Screen our orders for potential risk or fraud; and
  • When in line with the preferences you have shared with us, provide you with information or advertising relating to our products or services.

We use Student Access Information to provide accurate tracking to Users and Clients on completion and use of the courses, as well as for analysis on how to improve our services.

We use the Device Information that we collect to help us screen for potential risk and fraud (in particular, your IP address), and more generally to improve and optimize our Site (for example, by generating analytics about how our customers browse and interact with the Site, and to assess the success of our marketing and advertising campaigns).

SHARING YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION

We share your Personal Information with third parties to help us use your Personal Information, as described above. For example, with your employer who needs to verify your completion or progress of your studies. As described above, we use your Personal Information to provide you with targeted advertisements or marketing communications we believe may be of interest to you.
