World Breastfeeding Week 2020

August 2020

This year’s theme for World Breastfeeding Week is “Support breastfeeding for a healthier planet.”  In line with this theme, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) are calling on governments to protect and promote women’s access to skilled breastfeeding counselling, a critical component of breastfeeding support.

Global Care for Newly Postpartum Women: Korea

July 2020

“There are three types of nursery care facilities in Korea.  First, completely separated nursery room between mother’s and baby’s.  In this circumstance, mothers can spend time with their babies at limited meeting times for several minutes during their hospital stay.  The entire course of care is given in the nursery room only.  Second, partial rooming-in with mothers.  Rooming-in nursery service gives an opportunity for babies to spend time with their mothers during their hospital stay, and the partial rooming-in gives not full time but partial time in a day for them because main procedures are taken in the nursery room, not the mother’s room.  The last type of care is complete rooming-in care of babies and mothers.  This nursery practice gives care for the baby in the same room with mother from their time of birth to their discharge from the hospital,” (1).

Early Postpartum Attachment

July 2020

The works of Mary Ainsworth, John Bowlby, Marshall Klaus, and many others gave rise to the theories of attachment and bonding.  Although the terms are frequently used interchangeably, there is a distinct difference between them and a difference between when they are used prenatally and postnatally.  In an editorial of the Journal of Reproductive and Infant Psychology, Redshaw and Martin discuss these differences and their influence on current policies for maternity care although, “… there is no doubt that early contact can be very enjoyable for both parents, especially as many babies for several hours after birth have a prolonged period of alertness when face-to-face interaction is possible.  Skin-to-skin contact at this time has been found to facilitate initiation and continued breastfeeding, although in terms of long-term relationship benefits the evidence is less than substantial,” (2).

“But She Needs Her Sleep”

July 2020

One of the most common responses by hospital postpartum staff to the initiation of rooming-in (keeping the birthing parent and newborn together in the same room 24 hours a day during their hospital stay) is often something like, “But she needs her sleep.”  Postpartum fatigue in the literature was reviewed by Mathew et al (1) in 2018, where they found that Postpartum fatigue (PPF) is, “commonly experienced but not well understood,” (1).

Benefits of Rooming-In

July 2020

As defined by the World Health Organization and United Nations Children’s Fund, rooming-in is a “hospital practice where postnatal mothers and normal infants stay together in the same room for 24 hours a day from the time they arrive in their room after delivery”. (1)  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2013, operationalized this process to have mothers and infants stay together 23 out of 24 hours each day.  Initially, rooming-in was begun to promote and encourage early and frequent breastfeeding.  Crenshaw (2007) recommended rooming-in as a healthy birth practice.
