Baby Friendly Initiative: obstacles and potential solutions to implementation

The Baby Friendly Initiative is a journey that is not always an easy one. Along the path there will be ups and downs, as well as periods of frustration and excitement. To make the journey a little easier it is helpful to know that there is research about the barriers and recommendations related to implementing the Baby Friendly Initiative.

This research indicates that there are certain Baby-Friendly Initiative Steps that are easier to implement and others that are more difficult. Knowing this can help facilitators organise their plan of action for implementing the 10 Steps. Generally Step 3 (inform pregnant women about breastfeeding), Step 5 (show mothers how to breastfeed), and Step 8 (encourage breastfeeding on demand) have higher health facility compliance. Typically lower compliance is found with Step 1 (breastfeeding policy), Step 6 (give nothing but breastmilk), and Step 7 (rooming-in).

In 2012, Semenic et al., published in the Journal of Human Lactation "Barriers, Facilitators, and Recommendations Related to Implementing the Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI): An Integrative Review. This review identified a wide variety of obstacles and potential solutions to BFI implementation.

Findings suggest some priority issues to address when pursuing Baby Friendly designation, including the endorsements of both local administrators and governmental policy makers, effective leadership of the practice change process, health care worker training, the marketing influence of formula companies, and integrating hospital and community health services.

Framing the BFI as a complex, multilevel, evidence-based change process and using context-focused research implementation models to guide BFI implementation efforts may help identify effective strategies for promoting wider adoption of the BFI in health services. The review also found that availability for all maternity care staff including managers and doctors of mandatory and flexible breastfeeding education was identified in numerous articles as an essential element to improve staff attitude, knowledge and breastfeeding practices, helping pave the way for adoption of the other 10 Steps.(Semenic 2012)

Additionally when you make a purchase or attempt to make a purchase through the Site, we collect certain information from you, including your name, billing address, shipping address, payment information (including credit card numbers), email address, and phone number. We refer to this information as "Order Information."

  • Users who are undertaking a course as part of a group or organization have certain data tracked as part of the service we provide to Clients and Facilitators. This includes information showing if you have logged in and when, dates of completion and what and when particular study topics, resources and assessments were viewed and completed. We refer to this information as "Student Access Information"

When we talk about "Personal Information" in this Privacy Policy, we are talking about Device Information, Order Information and Student Access Information.

HOW DO WE USE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION?

We use the Order Information that we collect generally to fulfill any orders placed through the Site (including processing your payment information, arranging for shipping, and providing you with invoices and/or order confirmations). Additionally, we use this Order Information to:

  • Communicate with you;
  • Screen our orders for potential risk or fraud; and
  • When in line with the preferences you have shared with us, provide you with information or advertising relating to our products or services.

We use Student Access Information to provide accurate tracking to Users and Clients on completion and use of the courses, as well as for analysis on how to improve our services.

We use the Device Information that we collect to help us screen for potential risk and fraud (in particular, your IP address), and more generally to improve and optimize our Site (for example, by generating analytics about how our customers browse and interact with the Site, and to assess the success of our marketing and advertising campaigns).

SHARING YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION

We share your Personal Information with third parties to help us use your Personal Information, as described above. For example, with your employer who needs to verify your completion or progress of your studies. As described above, we use your Personal Information to provide you with targeted advertisements or marketing communications we believe may be of interest to you.
