Vasospasm

Do you know this painful nipple condition that occurs as a result of vasospasm within the nipple? In this condition the arterioles constrict causing blanching of the nipple with severe pain, and is usually followed by the nipples either turning blue (biphasic change), or blue then red (triphasic change). You may be thinking that this condition sounds familiar to you though not associated with the nipples - it is a Raynaud’s-like phenomenon, and is often precipitated by cold.

California Breastfeeding Coalition Conference 2014

Laura  NorthBay FacilitatorThe California Breastfeeding Coalition Conference in Sacramento was a positive, high energy event which boasted over 300 delegates and many world class speakers. You could feel the excitement in the air when representatives from 58 Baby Friendly accredited hospitals paraded through the conference hall, waving their banners and cheering their fellow designated hospitals. These 58 hospitals in California are designated by Baby Friendly USA and WHO/UNICEF and deliver world-class breastfeeding services to Mothers and Babies across the state. With 219 maternity hospitals still to achieve the coveted accreditation, we know that for California the only way is up!

Staff Attitudes

So long as staff are providing the level of care expected of them, does their attitude to breastfeeding really have an impact? The WHO/UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative is primarily focussed on hospital practices, ensuring that care given to mothers by health care providers during the prenatal and in-hospital time will not interfere with their opportunity to successfully breastfeed their infants. OK, we all get that!

Tongue Tie

December 2013

Historically the treatment of tongue tie has gone through periods where it was in favor, out of favor and is now back in favor again. I recall my mother (she was a midwife many years ago) telling me that all tongue ties were clipped at birth (well ... sometime during the 10-day compulsory hospital stay they had back then!!).

World Breastfeeding Week And Step 10

This month I’d like to encourage you to do a little forward-planning. World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is celebrated during the first week of August in most countries.
Each year WABA provides support for this event, including resources, and an Activity Kit, which often includes very useful tools such as promotional ideas and a Press Release. This gives you the perfect excuse to focus your hospital’s and the community’s attention on the wonderful work you are doing. It will also help you to gain kudos from your managers.

HOW DO WE USE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION?

We use the Order Information that we collect generally to fulfill any orders placed through the Site (including processing your payment information, arranging for shipping, and providing you with invoices and/or order confirmations). Additionally, we use this Order Information to:
