Nipple Shields

November 2015

For the month of November, the Thursday Truth series will focus on various breastfeeding devices in order to better assist you in choosing the appropriate tool and using it correctly. This week, let's discuss nipple shields.

Nipple shields, devices worn over the breast DURING a feeding, have been found in recorded history in one form or another for at least 500 years. Originally made of pewter, bone, wood, lead, glass, and even animal skins, they have changed through the decades.

Baby-Friendly and Electronic Medical Records

Yes, I survived! The hospital which employs me as an IBCLC had its two-day Baby-Friendly Site Assessment this past week. As a lifelong seeker of new information, I learned even through my stress!!

One of the things which reinforced my current knowledge during this visit was documentation of details in your electronic medical records (EMR) to comply with the BFHI requirements. Currently, how does your facility document breastfeeding, skin-to-skin care, rooming-in, and supplementation for the mother-infant dyad? Periodontal Syringe Use

November 2015

Here is week two of the November series on breastfeeding devices.  This is a photo of the curved-tip periodontal syringe made by Monoject, which will hold 12cc of fluid.  Although originally designed for use in dental procedures, Lactation Consultants have been using them to work with breastfed infants who need supplementation or any reason.  The periodontal syringe can be used for direct, at-the-breast supplementation or with finger-feeding.  It should never, though, be used to squirt milk into the mouth of an infant or for the infant to suck at the tip of the syringe.

Infant Formula Recalls

October 2015

As your facility prepares for Baby-Friendly, part of your job will include one-on-one parent education regarding artificial infant milks (AIM). With that in mind, did you know this:

"On September 22, 2010, Abbott issued a voluntary recall of certain Similac powdered infant formula after identifying a common warehouse beetle (both larvae and adults) in the finished product at their Sturgis, Michigan plant. The company immediately put all product manufactured at the Michigan plant on hold and ceased manufacturing at that location. FDA has advised against consumption of the recalled product and urged consumers to follow the manufacturer's instructions for reporting and returning the formula."

When we talk about "Personal Information" in this Privacy Policy, we are talking about Device Information, Order Information and Student Access Information.


We use the Order Information that we collect generally to fulfill any orders placed through the Site (including processing your payment information, arranging for shipping, and providing you with invoices and/or order confirmations). Additionally, we use this Order Information to:

  • Communicate with you;
  • Screen our orders for potential risk or fraud; and
  • When in line with the preferences you have shared with us, provide you with information or advertising relating to our products or services.

We use Student Access Information to provide accurate tracking to Users and Clients on completion and use of the courses, as well as for analysis on how to improve our services.

We use the Device Information that we collect to help us screen for potential risk and fraud (in particular, your IP address), and more generally to improve and optimize our Site (for example, by generating analytics about how our customers browse and interact with the Site, and to assess the success of our marketing and advertising campaigns).


We share your Personal Information with third parties to help us use your Personal Information, as described above. For example, with your employer who needs to verify your completion or progress of your studies.
