Sustaining Breastfeeding Together (WBW)

August 2017

August 1-7, annually, is World Breastfeeding Week (WBW).  This year marks the 25th year of this global celebration and effort to provide education about the importance of breastfeeding to the infant, mother, family, society, and environment. Coordinated by The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action, each year WBW has a different focus, with 2017 being “Sustaining Breastfeeding Together.”

WABA2017

WABA, in conjunction with the World Health Organization and UNICEF (https://www.unicef.org/nutrition/ ), developed the first World Breastfeeding Week in 1992, and all previous topics along with handouts are available at http://waba.org.my/ Some countries, such as the U.S., celebrate not only WBW but National Breastfeeding Month.

“The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) was formed on 14 February, 1991. WABA is a global network of organizations and individuals who believe breastfeeding is the right of all children and mothers and who dedicate themselves to protect, promote and support this right. WABA acts on the Innocenti Declaration and works in close liaison with UNICEF.” http://waba.org.my/about-waba/

“In the 15 years since the adoption of the original Innocenti Declaration in 1990, remarkable progress has been made in improving infant and young child feeding practices worldwide. Nevertheless, inappropriate feeding practices – sub-optimal or no breastfeeding and inadequate complementary feeding – remain the greatest threat to child health and survival globally. Improved breastfeeding alone could save the lives of more than 3,500 children every day, more than any other preventive intervention.” http://innocenti15.net/declaration.pdf.pdf

“What if governments had a proven, cost-effective way to save babies’ lives, reduce rates of malnutrition, support children’s health, increase educational attainment and grow productivity?
They do: It’s called breastfeeding. And it is one of the best investments nations can make in the lives and futures of their youngest members – and in the long-term strength of their societies.”
Anthony Lake, UNICEF Executive Director

I think Anthony Lake’s statement says it all! Share here on the discussion board what your facility did for World Breastfeeding Week, and if you are spending all of August celebrating breastfeeding.
