Happy Mother's Day

May 2017

Sunday, May 14th is Mother’s Day in many countries around the globe; here is a great link to find out when each country celebrates this special day in 2017. http://www.clareflorist.co.uk/international-mothers-day.aspx

Mother Hug

How impactful is being a mother? I’ll bet we could all compile long lists to answer this question, but I want to share two research studies that left a deep impression on me.

The first, published in 2012 by Natland et al., looked at maternal recall of breastfeeding duration. “Although short-term maternal recall has been found to be quite accurate, less is known about long-term accuracy” (p. 179). With a mean time since delivery of 21.2 years, the 374 women “recalled fairly accurately how long they breastfed their child after 20 years” (p. 188).

A 2009 study by Lundgren et al. looked at long-term memories and experience of childbirth. “The experience of childbirth is an important life experience for women. It is an ambivalent bittersweet and transcendent experience, and it has an impact on maternal self-efficacy. It changes life forever…” (p. 115). The authors state, “Childbirth in reflection after two to 20 years is experienced as an encounter with several co-actors beside the woman and her baby…the woman's feelings range from stormy, abrupt feelings of shock to calm reflection. The childbirth experience has a potential to strengthen self-confidence and trust in others or, on the contrary, it can mean failure or distrust” (p. 119).

Birth and breastfeeding are much more than just having a baby and feeding him/her. Think of all the hormones, the body memories, the emotions surrounding these experiences… is it any wonder that women can have vivid recall of them? Not only does this honor the processes, but it gives us all reason to be careful what kind of memories we are assisting the women we work with to make. They last for a lifetime!

Happy Mother’s Day.
