Baby Friendly Support Channels

March 2014

On your journey to Baby Friendly, or quest to keep the coveted title, you will be receiving help and support from many different quarters. We want to highlight a support channel you may not be aware of - see if you can guess which organisation we are talking about: Beginning 25 years ago, their ‘core partners’ are IBFAN, Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine, International Lactation Consultant Association, Le Leche League International and Wellstart International. They connect breastfeeding enthusiasts worldwide, and they lead the way in raising awareness of issues surrounding breastfeeding . Still not sure? Well read on!

It's WABA! WABA is the acronym for World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action. It began nearly 25 years ago and was formed as an umbrella organization to coordinate efforts to support breastfeeding on a worldwide basis. As such the breastfeeding support organizations that formed it have a worldwide focus. The ‘core partners’ are IBFAN, Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine, International Lactation Consultant Association, Le Leche League International and Wellstart International. That’s a pretty high-powered group in worldwide terms, I’m sure you’ll agree.

Please take the time to visit their website where you’ll find a nearly inexhaustible fund of information about breastfeeding and breastfeeding support. I love visiting this site to see what’s new around the world. It confirms that I am a part of something very big and very important - a feeling sometimes lost in the daily minutiae of working ‘at the coalface’.

WABA are the initiators and driving force behind World Breastfeeding Week. This global celebration of breastfeeding is your golden opportunity to do a big promotion of breastfeeding and Baby Friendly in your hospitals and community. They have a different theme each year and create lots of resources you can use. It’s held in most countries during the first week of August. This year’s theme is: “Breastfeeding: A Winning Goal for Life!” Visit the WBW page now and start thinking about what you and your team can do in August.

You’ll also LOVE the Breastfeeding Gateway which was created by WABA.
Here you’ll find various topics of interest on the left of the page, and tools on the right. Click on a topic and you’ll be taken to lists of excellent information available on the internet on that topic, as well as links to videos, press releases, blogs, etc. It’s a fantastic resource - try it out today.

Finally I’d encourage you to join them as an individual or an organization. It doesn’t cost anything, though donations would be gladly received. You’ll receive their e-newsletter which is full of news and information. Read their latest edition here

I hope you’ll find those links and resources to be useful for you, and also very reaffirming that you are not alone in supporting something that is really worthwhile in this beautiful world of ours.

Until next time
